Rebuilding and Repairing Feed Screws

Rebuilding and repairing injection molding screws and extrusion screws provides substantial cost savings and extends the life of your expensive equipment for years. It is important for your company to monitor and record wear measurements of your equipment as part of your maintenance protocol to stay ahead of the wear. Our team can assess your equipment either by measurement or by photo to determine if your screws are in reasonable condition to be restored to like-new condition. If your extrusion screw or injection molding screw is beyond repair, our team of expert screw designers will consult with you to design a replacement screw to keep you running successfully!

What to Expect

When your company suspects that your screw and/or barrel is worn, we can send a SpiraMelt field service technician to your company to perform a thorough, detailed inspection of your equipment on-site. Our team of experts will evaluate the overall condition of your screw, such as root wear and damage, OD wear and damage, structural integrity of the base material, etc. A multitude of measurements are taken to determine the severity of the wear and whether your screw is a suitable candidate for screw rebuilding/refurbishment. If your screw can be reliably rebuilt, the SpiraMelt engineering department will assess the detailed inspection report and generate recommendations and pricing/lead times to rebuild your screw to like-new condition.

  • Screw flights are repaired and rebuilt to SPI standards to meet or exceed original OEM tolerances
  • A variety of PTA hardfacing materials and HVOF thermal spray materials are available to re-establish or improve the original wear resistance of the OD or root
  • Broken flights and broken drive ends can be repaired or replaced
  • Mixing sections can be repaired, replaced, or added to your existing screw
  • Screws can be re-chrome plated, nitrided, carbide encapsulated, etc.
  • If it is more economical to replace your worn screw, SpiraMelt screw experts can make recommendations to maximize your production efficiency with new equipment

Extend Barrel Life

Repair and Reline Your Barrels

Extrusion barrels and injection molding barrels are often expensive but overlooked. When your barrel wears, the radial clearance between the barrel wall and screw OD not only reduces output and part quality but also expedites barrel and screw wear! If your barrel gets damaged from debris, machine failure, or general wear, SpiraMelt is here for you! Our team can salvage your barrels with relining, repair, and precision honing services, saving you time and money.

Barrel Relining and Repair

In most cases, extrusion barrels and injection molding barrels can be relined, repaired, or honed to re-establish a clean, concentric internal diameter free of rough surfaces. There can be substantial savings in both cost and delivery time with remanufacturing barrels compared to replacing old barrels. Depending on the severity of the wear or damage, only short sections of barrel (typically on the discharge end) need to be re-sleeved. At SpiraMelt, our goal is to keep your machines running efficiently with innovative, economical options. Due to the relative thickness of most bimetallic liners, it is important for your company to monitor overall radial wear on your barrels over time.

What to Expect

When your company suspects that your screw barrel is worn, we can send a SpiraMelt field service technician to your company to perform a thorough, detailed inspection of your equipment on-site. Our team of experts will evaluate the overall condition of your barrel and measure the barrel ID throughout to determine the severity of the wear and whether your barrel is a suitable candidate for barrel relining/refurbishment. If your barrel can be reliably remanufactured, the SpiraMelt engineering department will assess the detailed inspection report and generate recommendations and pricing/lead times to rebuild your barrel to like-new condition.

  • The inner wall of the barrel is bored out, removing the existing bimetallic inlay
  • A new bimetallic liner is machined, oversized
  • Through a special heat-shrinking process, the liner is permanently  secured with an interference fit inside the barrel
  • Barrel internal diameters are re-established to SPI standards to meet or exceed original OEM tolerances
  • If it is more economical to replace your worn barrel, SpiraMelt engineers can make recommendations to maximize your production efficiency with new equipment

Things to Consider

Screw and barrel wear is the enemy of melt quality and performance. When worn processing sections are ignored, output and quality gradually drop over time while energy consumption soars. Trust the experts in screw design, manufacturing, and rebuilding with your production.

Worn Screws

  • How worn is the screw OD and root?
  • What are the wear characteristics?
  • Can the existing screw design be significantly improved?
  • Can the surface treatment be improved?
  • Cost of Repair vs. Replace

Worn Barrels

  • How worn is the barrel ID?
  • Where is the wear located?
  • What caused the damage?
